We can use this to discuss the assignment for this week. My email for google is darcey.turner2893@gmai.com. Or if you would like to use the Western one darcey.l.turner@wmich.edu. :)
I breifly just looked over the assignment and thought that an idea we cold do with another class from a different country would be to compare meals that they eat a around the holidays and different holiday traditions. This could really help children learn about different cultures. I will look over the assignment more tomorrow and reply back then. My email is madelyn.g.buhrman@wmich.edu
I like that idea, the students could ask questions about their penpals traditions, and write about what is traditional in their own life in regards to holidays.
I really like the idea of sharing different holiday meals and traditions! My email is beccamh15@gmail.com or rebecca.m.horton@wmich.edu. We could title our google doc "Holidays Around the World"
Also we have to pick a specific location and grade level. For the location I think we should pick a place within the US and we could do a state that is southern and near the west coast so then it is in the opposite region that we are in. Some states could be Arizona, New Mexico, Southern California. I think that we should do the same grade level as the students in our lesson. So we could figure out what specific grade level our project is for and then do the same. I would suggest doing an upper elementary level like 4th or 5th grade. What do you guys think?
I made the google doc and invited you both to join it so you should be receiving an email for it. I think fifth graders would be the best age group. I like the idea of doing Arizona, New Mexico or Southern California. I also like the idea of doing a different country. I will start making some bullet points in the google doc and then we can type up the assignment from there
I like the idea of using the geographic location in New Mexico, Arizona, or Southern California. Students there will have different experiences than the students in Michigan would. Once they receive the information from the students, our students then should try to implement the traditions into our community dinner (by cooking something they traditionally eat and making display boards that can be hung up at the community dinner about the pals).
I am not sure who can accept it but I had to request access to be apart of the google doc, so as of right now I can't see it. Once somebody accepts it can you reply back on the blog so that I can go through and edit as well. Thanks!
I can't accept, but I had this problem too. If you "switch accounts" and login in thru your wmich email then you should be able to edit. The invite was sent to my wmich email, but I had google docs logged into my gmail account. I switched and was granted access. Hope this helps!
For some reason it won't let me login with my wmich account, I'm not sure why. Something we could do with the pen-pals is that we could have them exchange a recipe with the other student and then as a class we could make a cookbook of all the recipes. Then we could use some of the recipes from the cookbook in our community dinner.
Also I have no problem creating the Google map section but I'm not 100% sure what all it is suppose to entail. Is it just supposed to have the location of our Pen-Pals? Or do we need to have it relate to our project in a different way?
I feel like having a "route" from where our students will be to the location of our pen pals would be enough for the map. Then we could include the map with your idea of using the cookbook and have that be part of the fundraiser. We could include the map and a little blurb about "meet our pals" so people could see that the students are connecting to the larger world. Students could sell them during to help off set the costs they would have had.
Yea I can pick an elementary/middle school! I still haven't been given access with my gmail and when I go to change accounts it brings me to a google sign in page and won't accept my wmich email. I can try to look up how to do it but right now I am still waiting on access. Would you be able to put the paper thus far in a blog comment so that i could take a look and then post my edits through the blog?? I am not sure what else to do.
Becca You probably know this, but if you didn't- you can add the map to the whole post by going to the blogger dashboard, clicking on the grey paper button (next to the orange edit button), clicking on posts, and editing the Holidays Around the World Blog Post.
Yea I posted the map already and wrote a little bit about it as well in the same post! I am just making some final adjustments to the paper and then we should be all set!
Everything looks great. I just looked over everything and I think it looks good. Becca do you still need access to the google doc? I think everything that we've wrote up looks good but if you have something you want to edit I can try to send it to a different email for you. Let me know.

ReplyDeleteWe need to figure out what our students will do with the information they receive from the other students
ReplyDeleteI briefly just wrote a little thing up, feel free to edit and change things as there are still changes that need to be made.

DeleteFor the map do you guys know if we have to pick a school for the destination or can it just be a city?
ReplyDeleteHow about we do a school, that way it is more realistic. Are you able to edit now Becca?
