  1. Hi girls!

For the collaborative podcast, I was thinking that if it was okay I would handle why we are using project based learning. If I get the okay from you both, I will work on a script for you to approve.

  2. Darcy, that is okay with me! I can discuss what we have done so far but I am a little confused on what exactly I would talk about. Would it be what we have done so far in our class or what we have done so far to create the project?

    1. I think it is supposed to be what we have do so far to create the project. I might confirm with her just to be safe!

  3. Okay, so would I talk about how we are having the class have virtual pen pals and then what we did in our lessons to contribute to the dinner so that the parents can be informed through the podcast? I guess I am just a little confused.

  5. Here is my script, please tell me what you think!

Our class has been working diligently to create a holiday dinner in which the community can come together and enjoy delicious food. The book, “Reinventing Project Based Learning” by Suzie Boss and Jane Krauss, discusses what features good projects share. One of the features is that the project should reach beyond school to involve others. This is one of the reasons why we decided to hold a community dinner. The end result of this project will involve so many people and everyone will have the chance to see the student’s hard work.
The book, “Reinventing Project Based Learning” also talks about online communities. These communities allow students to talk with other students from a different place in the world. The first thing our students did for this project was they started to discuss it with virtual pen pals. These pen pals are from an elementary school in Arizona. Every state has so many different types of traditions. By communicating with students in Arizona, it allows our students to hear about different cultures. We created a map that shows how far it is from our school to our pen pals school. It would take about 27-30 hours to get there. If you attend the holiday dinner you will have a chance to see our map because we will be displaying it.
We taught our class a lesson on the different cultural holidays. This gave our students the chance to learn about holidays that they might not know much about. A lot of times we only know about the holidays we celebrate but this allowed them to become educated on other holidays since we will be celebrating many holidays at our dinner. We also taught a lesson on fractions so that our students will understand measurements when we are cooking for the dinner. Our students learned the words “Numerator” and “Denominator” and now have a better understanding of what these words mean. We are very excited to put these words to use during the cooking process. For our dinner we are going to send our written letter invitations. Our students recently learned how to format a letter and what to say when inviting someone to a dinner. This lesson helped students to learn why properly writing a letter is important. It also helped them to better their writing skills. 6. Hi guys!
Sorry it has been a crazy week for me! Both of those ideas sounds great and I am going to do my podcast about what is next. I am going to go into detail about how our lessons will show in our community dinner and exactly how we are going to organize the dinner. Some things I will mention would be the RSVP's and keeping track of who is attending, health and safety procedures that will be used when preparing the meal, advertising, analyzing the cost of the event, and the planning that the students will be doing in order to make this dinner a success.
Madelyn, I looked over your script and it looks great! One thing you could add would be to talk about the MyPlate program and how we incorporated that into our lesson.

  7. Here is my script! Please let me know what you think, I will record when I get the okay from you both.
We should also decide who is going to put all of our recording together

We wanted to incorporate a Holiday Community Dinner this year. To do this we decided to have our students use Project-Based Learning. Project-Based Learning does not follow the traditional classroom procedure. Students learn by engaging in real-world projects. Project-Based Learning allows students to be independent and work together collaboratively. This allows our students to have a different experience than they would with teach led instruction.
Our role as teacher’s change where we are no longer the expert of the material. Instead we give students bits of information every so often. We design the project framework and allow the students to use technology to obtain information from all over the world.
With our Holiday Community Dinner, project-based learning allows students to be able organize and present the event to the community with minimal help from us. It allows them to be more proud of their accomplishments because they put it together themselves.

  12. I am emailing my podcast, when I saved it as MP3 it broke it down into shorter clips. Does anyone know if it was supposed to do that. This is not the easiest tool to work with or I'm just not very good with that type of thing haha

  15. Both of the recordings sounded great! Sorry this is a bit later than I was going to post but here is my transcript!

Now going forward the students will get involved with the public, and put on the community holiday dinner event. The students have already learned about the different holidays celebrated during the winter months. These holidays will be represented in our dinner by having different cultural recipes and by having display boards at the dinner that tell about each holiday. Also going forward, our class is going to start planning the invitation process. As a class we will figure out how many people or who to invite. Once we have our guest list we have to figure out how to invite them, should it be an email or a printed off invite. Once the invitations are sent out we will choose a date for the event. In addition to that we will be deciding what our meal will entail and what materials we will need. I will be doing a lesson on health and safety procedures we will be using while cooking as well. The students will be broken up into teams for the various tasks needed to put on this event. Team 1 will include sending out invitations and finding possible venues. Team 2 will be keeping track of RSVPs and analyzing the cost of materials. Team 3 will be in charge of creating the display boards and decorations. Team 4 will be involved with the meal prep and serving the food on the day of the event.
